A vida é um filme

The happy couple, Antonio and Margarida

A World Cup wedding
Wednesday 26th September 2007

Portuguese winger Antonio Aguilar was given a prize better than winning the World Cup itself after his side completed their final pool game in Toulouse on Tuesday.

Having been with his fiancee, Margarida, for the past eight years the speedy winger has failed to tie the knot due to rugby commitments.

Aguilar proposed to Margarida four years ago but they never married at the time due to being in separate countries. He was in France playing rugby whilst she remained in Portugal.

A lack of wedding plans on Aguilar's behalf prompted Margarida to surprise her fiancee with her own proposal after their final World Cup pool game.

On completing their lap of honour Margarida gave the squad T-shirts which had a picture of herself and Aguilar on with the message, 'Antonio, will you marry me?'. The same message was also flashed up on the scoreboard.

Aguilar accepted the proposal but was still not certain on the wedding plans. "She surprised me," he told AFP.

"I know she wants to get married, we've been engaged a long time. I don't know when we'll do it, maybe next year. I'm crossing my fingers."
